Briefing: oil workers strike in Casanare, Colombia

Since BP began oil exploration and production in Casanare Colombia in the early 1990s, six thousand people have been assassinated and three thousand people disappeared. Every time there have been complaints or protests in opposition to BP's interests, the community leaders concerned have been killed. This indicates an elimination strategy of violent social control. The agents have been the military and paramilitary groups, but BP as a corporation hás itself been complicit in the human rights violations.

Big Oil In Colombia - New documentary

This documentary tells the devastating story of the discovery and exploration of Oil in
Casanare, northeast Colombia and the strategy of Big Oil, in this case British Petroluem, for
looting oil resources. Around 300,000 people live in Casanare. In the past 20 years, three
percent (3%) of the population have been murdered or disappeared. Many more have been
forced to abandon their lands and and peasant farmer livelihoods due to violence by the
joint actions of Colombian armed forces and paramilitary groups. This climate of fear relates
in with investor “security” for BP's oil flow and profits resulting, assuring that their is no
grassroots opposition to the oil extraction.

Construction workers at the BP plant in Tauramena, Casanare, Colombia have been in occupation since 21 May.

Their demands are:

· Implement Wage Increases
· Establish a Wage Scale
· Establish Due Process in Disciplinary Decisions
· Labour Guarantees for the Workers.

BP AGM: Confronting Power with Solidarity

On Thursday 15 April a team from community group COS-PACC, Espacio Bristol-Colombia and the Colombia Solidarity Campaign entered the BP AGM to press the Petition of Demands drawn up by the Movement for Dignity of Casanare: for a union collective agreement, for environmental and human rights protections, for real social investment and for the corporation to take goods and services from local suppliers.

The Movement for the Dignity of the Casanare

The Movement for the Dignity of the Casanare presented a Petition of Demands to BP inColombia on 23 March 2010. The movement supported a 30 day long strike at the CentralProcessing Facility in Tauramena, Casanare, which ended at the end of February 2010.

The Movement for the Dignity of the Casanare includes national Oil Workers UnionUSO, transporters, the Business and Employers Council, the Upamena Community, the IquiaCommunity, COS-PACC, Red Antorcha, Radio Suba al Aire, CENSAT (Friends of the Earth), Joint Traders, the U'wa Indigenous Community, Christian Aid, El Turbion newspaper, Familiares Colombia and other independent sectors.

The petition includes serious complaints against BP's conduct, but also offers a constructivestance with specific proposals to be carried forward in a negotiation process. The next phase oftalks is due to take place in Casanare 14-16 April 2010.

BP in Casanare: Workers back, mobilisation continues

26 Feb 2010. After a month of work stoppage and protests, this week BP at last met with the strikers and community representatives around its oil fields in Casanare, Colombia (link to previous report ).

Very late Tuesday night the two sides reached an agreement, although with some ambiguities. Earlier that day BP had tried to run a group of scabs through the picket line on the Tauramena Central Processing Facility (CPF), but the strikers chained themselves to the gates and successfully blocked the strike-breakers.

One interrupted the cheesy BP PR man’s presentation as he claimed that he ‘loved the countryside’ - while putting the gloss on oil and gas exploration, extraction and financing - to ask, why then, has BP spent more on its green sunflower rebranding than on its annual renewable energy budget?
