Colombia: Gold vs Preservation in the Central Mountains

In a protected area of the Cordillera Central, Colombia’s central mountain range, gold mining plans are clashing with the desire of farmers, activists and environmental officials to preserve forests and water resources. A movement made up of 25 international, national and local non-governmental organisations is calling on the government to halt the exploration activities of the South Africa-based mining giant AngloGold Ashanti, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Colombia: Attack on Labour rights by contracting agency for El Cerrejon mine

The Cerrejon mine is owned by London-listed Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Xstrata.

The National Union of the Coal Industry, SINTRACARBON, brings to local, national and international attention the attack by the contracting firm, SOTRANS, on the labour rights of its workers, simply because they have had the audacity to unionize as a means of gaining certain fundamental rights enshrined in ILO strategic objectives. This includes the right of free association, freedom to unionize and the right to collective bargaining as outlined in ILO agreements 87 and 98, ratified by Colombia.

El Sindicato Nacional de la Industria del carbón SINTRACARBON, denuncia a nivel local, nacional e internacional la masacre laboral a la que estan siendo sometidos los trabajadores de la empresa contratista SOTRANS, por el solo hecho de haberse atrevido a organizarse sindicalmente y de esta forma poder disfrutar de algunos derechos fundamentales consagrados en los objetivos estrategicos de OIT, como son los derechos de libre asociación - libertad sindical, y negociación colectiva, convenios 87 y 98 de OIT ratificados por Colombia.
